Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

1. Who are we?

We are a group of individuals who are committed to social change, with various working experiences in the private sector and civil society in the UK and in Turkey. We all live in the UK and have a background in Turkey.

2. Who provides funding to Turkey Mozaik Foundation?

Turkey Mozaik Foundation was founded by Trustees as a means to increase the support available to small non-profit organisations. Our donors aim to make a difference through facilitating funding for grassroots organisations, which otherwise have very limited access to funds.

3. Where does the idea of a grant-giving charity come from?

Research indicates grassroots organisations often have local knowledge and expertise in their fields but lack the funding.

Grant-giving foundations have a long history in countries such as the USA and the UK. However, in Turkey, civil society funding is mostly limited to international organisations as very few local organisations function as grant-giving foundations. Therefore, we aim to fill that gap.

4. Are you a political organisation?

No.

5. How can I get information regarding your activities?

You can subscribe to our monthly newsletter. For more information please email info@turkeymozaik.org.uk.

6. What is the relationship between Turkey Mozaik Foundation and Sivil Toplum için Destek Vakfi?

We work with carefully selected partner organisations. Sivil Toplum için Destek Vakfi is our main partner providing local know-how and connections within the Turkish civil society landscape.

7. What is the governance structure of Turkey Mozaik Foundation?

We are a charitable incorporated organisation registered with the Charities Commission UK (Registration number: 1174968). We have a Board of Trustees who meet monthly to make and implement strategic and administrative decisions.

2. What kind of charities do you support?

We support grassroots organisations aspiring to make a social impact in the fields of education, health, children’s rights, gender equality, culture & arts, and environmental sustainability.

3. Who decides where my donations go? What are the selection criteria?

The Board of Trustees, with the support of the donors, decide on which charities to support.

There are six criteria that are taken into account during the decision process:

– Institutional capacity

– Originality of the approach and solution

– Proximity of the charity to the cause

– Focus on the root cause

– Scalability of the approach

– Level of potential social impact

4. How do the charities report back to you?

After making a decision to support an applicant organisation, a grant agreement is signed. The grantees need to provide interim reports during a grant cycle that summarises their progress to date and financials in relation to their agreed deliverables as stated in the funding application. They also provide monthly reports that detail their current activities.

In a grant cycle, grantee organisations receive payments in three instalments. The first instalment (usually 50% of the grant) is released following the signing of the grant agreement. The second instalment (around 35% of the grant) is released after the interim report. The last instalment is released after the final report.

5. What is the reporting trail of my donation?

You will receive a monthly newsletter that will brief you on the work of the grantee organisations active in the field. These newsletters will be curated using the interim and final reports received from the grantees. Twice a year we will organise study trips to Turkey, where you will also have the opportunity to meet the organisations and get further insight about their work.

We are a (potential) grantee

1. How do you identify the charities to support?

Information on open calls for applications, including programme priorities, eligibility and selection criteria, can be found on our as well as our partners’ websites and social media accounts.

Charities apply through completing an online application form. They should also attach their charity governance/constitution documents in English in order for us to decide if they are charitable according to the UK charity law or not.

After an initial screening process, the shortlisted charities are interviewed. Based on the interviews and our internal analyses, our selection committee conducts the final assessment. Allocation of funds are dependent on the size of the available funding pool. All the grants are transferred via bank accounts and are therefore registered.

2. Do you have a policy of conflict of interest?

Anybody who either has a formal (such as being a Trustee, staff etc.) as well as an informal (such as a big donor) relationship to any of the charities that applied cannot take part in the grantee selection process.

3. We are a charity from the UK. Can we apply for funding?

Yes, you can, as long as the programme / project is relevant to Turkey.
