Unveiling the Impact: One Year After the Kahramanmaras Earthquakes

It has been a year since the devastating earthquakes that struck 11 provinces across Türkiye on February 6, 2023, affecting an estimated 15 million people. As we remember the lives lost because of this disaster, we reflect upon the resilience and unity that emerged in its aftermath.

Over the past 12 months, we have experienced great sadness, but also a remarkable outpouring of solidarity from our friends and donors who have supported our Kahramanmaras Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund.

Thanks to the generosity of over 18,000 donors, we raised £4 million. We have so far granted £3,155,344 to support 92 projects run by carefully selected civil society organisations to provide immediate relief and contribute to long-term recovery, impacting more than 750,000 lives.

The impact of these grants spanned critical areas, including search & rescue, emergency supplies, shelter & safe spaces, hygiene kits, food assistance, cash assistance, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), psychosocial support, educational support, health, economic development, capacity building & advocacy, and organisational development. Together, we have played a vital role in rebuilding lives and communities in Türkiye.

Turkey Mozaik Foundation has served as a trusted bridge between local civil society organisations and those who wish to support Türkiye. We are deeply grateful to our growing community of friends and donors in the UK and beyond.

Our heartfelt thanks also go to our dedicated grantees who have worked tirelessly on the ground, sharing their expertise to maximise the impact of our donors’ contributions.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Turkey Mozaik Foundation receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

Acceptance of any contribution, gift or grant is at the discretion of the Turkey Mozaik Foundation. The Turkey Mozaik Foundation will not accept any gift unless it can be used or expended consistently with the purpose and mission of the Turkey Mozaik Foundation.

No irrevocable gift, whether outright or life-income in character, will be accepted if under any reasonable set of circumstances the gift would jeopardize the donor’s financial security.

The Turkey Mozaik Foundation will refrain from providing advice about the tax or other treatment of gifts and will encourage donors to seek guidance from their own professional advisers to assist them in the process of making their donation.

The Turkey Mozaik Foundation will accept donations of cash or publicly traded securities. Gifts of in-kind services will be accepted at the discretion of the Turkey Mozaik Foundation.

Certain other gifts, real property, personal property, in-kind gifts, non-liquid securities, and contributions whose sources are not transparent or whose use is restricted in some manner, must be reviewed prior to acceptance due to the special obligations raised or liabilities they may pose for Turkey Mozaik Foundation.

The Turkey Mozaik Foundation will provide acknowledgments to donors meeting tax requirements for property received by the charity as a gift. However, except for gifts of cash and publicly traded securities, no value shall be ascribed to any receipt or other form of substantiation of a gift received by Turkey Mozaik Foundation.

The Turkey Mozaik Foundation will respect the intent of the donor relating to gifts for restricted purposes and those relating to the desire to remain anonymous. With respect to anonymous gifts, the Turkey Mozaik Foundation will restrict information about the donor to only those staff members with a need to know.

The Turkey Mozaik Foundation will not compensate, whether through commissions, finders' fees, or other means, any third party for directing a gift or a donor to the Turkey Mozaik Foundation.
