As we approach the first anniversary of the devastating earthquakes of 6 February, we want to share with you the journey of our Kahramanmaras Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund. As we reflect on the past year, our discussion will focus on the results and impact of the fund and our next steps planned for 2024.
Our partner, the Support Foundation for Civil Society (Sivil Toplum için Destek Vakfı), will present key findings from their research and their insights, with a particular focus on assessing the needs of civil society organisations working in the earthquake-affected regions.
The event will include an engaging panel discussion with our grantees, Gül Erdost from the Women’s Coalition, Ulaş Bayraktar from Kulturhane, and Dr. İnan İzci from the Argüden Governance Academy. Our panelists will shed light on key issues such as gender equality and women’s empowerment, the role of culture & arts, and civic participation and oversight, while mitigating the impact of the earthquakes, improving the well-being of survivors, and helping to restore livelihoods in disaster-hit areas.

Gül Erdost (Women’s Coalition) has a master’s degree in social work from Hacettepe University. She held workshops in Türkiye and in Europe through youth and women’s exchange programs in the fields of migration, violence against women, gender equality, and social services. She started working at the UNFPA as a project coordinator in 2009 and continued for 15 years while working on various projects implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Migration Management, and local governments on training key personnel, capacity-building, advocacy, and monitoring. She produced training materials and delivered training to support service providers and prevent burnout in the field. She currently works as an independent consultant in supervision, self-care, gender equality, psychosocial support in disasters, empowerment and other areas of social work. She provides consultancy to ensure the functioning of the Women’s Life Centres set up by the Women’s Coalition after the earthquakes.
Ulaş Bayraktar (Kulturhane) graduated from Galatasaray University, Department of Public Administration and completed his master’s and doctoral studies at the Paris Political Scientific Institute. In 2017, he worked as a lecturer at Mersin University, Department of Public Administration until he was dismissed with a decree law. Since then, as one of the co-founders of Kulturhane, he has been trying to maintain an open space in Mersin. As of May 2023, he was reinstated to his position at the university. He is currently working on a cultural policy report based on his interviews with arts and culture organisations in different cities of Türkiye as part of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts’ European Union-funded project “Ortaklaşa”.
Dr. İnan İzci (Argüden Governance Academy) earned his master’s degree at the University of London and obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Free University of Brussels. His professional career began in 2001 as a General Advisor at the Citizen Advice Bureau in London. In 2007, he started his career in Türkiye as a European Union (EU) and External Relations Specialist at the Istanbul Provincial Administration. From 2009 to 2014, he continued as the EU and External Relations Coordinator at Sarıyer Municipality. In 2019, he worked as a consultant in the Municipal Financial Governance project conducted by the World Bank. Dr. İzci, a Managing Partner at ARGE Consultancy, has various publications on good governance, sustainable development, and public policies.
